"Gendering identities in education"

These seminars have been organised with seedcorn funding from the Gender and Education Association, and with support from the Centre for the Study of Women and Gender (Department of Sociology, University of Warwick).

Seminar 1:

The Battlefields of Inclusion. Militarism, Schooling and the Politics and Experiences of Inclusion: Asking Questions and Making Connections.
Shereen Benjamin, University of Birmingham

Shereen Benjamin has researched in the area for several years and has published articles in Gender and Education and the British Journal of Sociology of Education. She has published chapters in various books and in 2002 the book "The Micropolitics of Special Educational Needs: An ethnography". (Buckingham: Open University Press).

Seminar 2:

Working and Learning in Higher Education: auto/biography, gender and identity
Gayle Letherby and Jen Marchbank, Coventry University

Jen Marchbank works at Coventry University where she is Head of Undergraduate Studies for the School of Health and Social Sciences. Although she has spent a long time in Women's Studies, including a stint as Co-Chair of the Women's Studies Network, her teaching experience includes Sociology, Politics, History, Political Economy and Social Policy!

Gayle Letherby is Reader in the Sociology of Gender at Coventry University where she is also Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Justice and Associate Head of Social Work, Health and Social Sciences. Gayle is a sociologist by background. Her research and writing interests are varied. She has researched and published in the following areas - reproductive identity, family and kinship, methodology and epistemology, teaching and learning in higher education, criminology and the sociology of trains.
